The Geoscience Research and Applications Group covers the full science-to-applications spectrum, over a diverse set of technical disciplines, in a single organization. We have used this breadth --- from fundamental scientific investigation, to development of system concepts, to engineering design and implementation --- to solve challenging problems for our nation. Major examples of our successes include the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, radioactive waste repositories and transportation systems, locating and characterizing subsurface facilities in denied territories, and effective cleanup of subsurface contamination. We are well recognized and active within the international technical community for our contributions to advancing fundamental understanding in geosciences as well as for engineering advancements in transportation systems. It is our appreciation of the science-to-applications continuum that enables us to create major new programs engaging expertise across Sandia, most recently the Water Initiative. As we look to the future, we will continue to draw on these diverse strengths to create solutions that are well aligned with our technical expertise and with the vision and strategies of our customers and Sandia's Strategic Management Units.
The group is staffed by more than 100 technical employees supported by a blend of administrative personnel. We have an active program for post-doctoral fellows, students, and visiting industry associates. Our permanent facilities are sited in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but we carry out field experiments wherever required.
